RIM Client Installation

You must first install the device application to your RIM device. This guide will take you through the steps to install the RIM client application on your device. Topics that will be covered include:

  • Updating Service Book Entries

  • Registering with the Network

  • Backing up the device

  • Adding the RIM client application to the list of available applications

  • Dealing with existing applications and data on your device

Updating Service Book Entries

1.) Select “Options” from the main screen of the RIM device.

2.) Select “Service Book Options” under the Option menu.

If there are no service book entries on the device, you will see a screen with 'No Service Book Entries' across the top, and you will need to register with the network (see “ with the Network”). If there are service book entries, you will see a screen similar to this:

Note: If you have a service book entry named “Desktop”, delete this entry – it is used by the Blackberry Desktop Redirector. If your only service book entry is “Desktop”, delete the “Desktop” entry and reregister with the network (see “ with the Network”)

Note: Your service book entries will have different names depending on the carrier you are using.

Carrier Service Book Entries
Metrocall Messenger
Fax
AGENT
Dial/Opr
MyBlackberry.net My Blackberry Users
Device/Reg
Skytel (DataTac) Skytel
AGENT
Skytel (Mobitex) Skytel Svc
Skytel Profile

3.) Select the “Message Services” entry in the “Options” list.

If you receive a popup saying there are no message services, you will need to re-register with the network (see “ with the Network”)

4.) Select “Messenger” for the “Email Service” and save (Metrocall specific).

Note: The “Email Service” Options will have different names depending on which carrier is being used.

Carrier Email Service Name
SkyTel DataTac SkyTel
SkyTel Mobitex SkyTel Service
Metrocall Messenger
Blackberry.net My Blackberry Users

Registering with the Network

1.) Select the “Options” icon from the main screen of the RIM device.

2.) Select “Network Settings” from the options list.

3.) Select “Register Now” from the menu.

If your carrier supports over-the-air registration (Skytel Datatac), a registration message will be sent to the device that will put service book entries on the device. If you do not receive registration messages, your carrier probably does not support over-the-air registration.

Some carriers are distributing software that loads service book entries to the device when the device is placed in the cradle while the Blackberry “Desktop Manager” is running(Skytel Mobitex). You can try putting the device in the cradle to see if any service book entries are entered onto the device.

Some carriers require you to call their customer service number to get service book entries sent out to the device (Metrocall, MyBlackberry.net). If this is the case, be sure to backup your device using the Blackberry “Desktop Manager” application after you receive the service book entries – this will allow you to restore the service book entries if they get deleted.

Restoring Service Book Entries from a Backup File

If you have a backup file with service book entries you can load them using the Blackberry Desktop manager software. The backup file will have an extension of .ipd and should be located in the Blackberry Desktop manager install directory on your computer. The default directory is:

C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\Blackberry

  1. Open the Blackberry Desktop manager (make sure your device is in the cradle first)

  2. Select the backup/restore icon

  3. Select restore on the dialog – this will open a file window

  4. Select the backup file to restore – this has an extension of .ipd. You may need to navigate the file system to correct directory to find this file. Once the file is selected, click OK.

  5. A dialog will be shown listing the databases to be restored – click “NO” on this dialog to cancel it and return to the backup/restore dialog.

  6. On the backup/restore dialog click on “Advanced”. This will show a screen with a list of databases in the backup file on the left, and a list of databases on the handheld on the right.

  7. Select the “Service Book” database in the left hand list of databases (the list of databases in the backup file)

  8. Press the right arrow to load the database to the handheld.

  9. After the loading is finished go to Options/Service Book Entries on the device, and make sure the correct service books are there. The following list shows which service books you should have depending on who the carrier is for the device:

Carrier Service Book Entries
Metrocall Messenger
Fax
AGENT
Dial/Opr
MyBlackberry.net My Blackberry Users
Device/Reg
Skytel (DataTac) Skytel
AGENT
Skytel (Mobitex) Skytel Svc
Skytel Profile

If there are any service books other than these on the device they can be removed.

  1. Go to Options/Message Services and make sure the correct message service is selected. The following list shows which message service should be selected depending on the carrier for the device:

Carrier Email Service Name
SkyTel DataTac SkyTel
SkyTel Mobitex SkyTel Service
Metrocall Messenger
Blackberry.net My Blackberry Users

Install the device application to your RIM device

You should have received or downloaded two files for installing the RIM client application. One is a dynamic link library (DLL) file and one is an application loader information (ALI) file. These two files may be packaged together in one ZIP file. If so, unzip the ZIP file to get the DLL and the ALI.

Determine if your RIM device uses the Mobitex or DataTAC network. RIM 850 and 857 devices run on the DataTAC network. RIM 950 and 957 devices run on the Mobitex network.

The install files need to be placed in the appropriate installation directory based on the network your device uses. The directory is \Loader Files\DataTac or \Loader Files\Mobitex. The default path for the directory is c:\program files\research in motion\blackberry\Loader Files\Network.

To load the application to the device:

Open the Desktop Manager -- by default there should be an icon for this on your desktop after installing the Blackberry Software, if you have deleted this icon, you can find the program in your installation directory under BlackBerry folder. The name of this program is DesktopMgr. The default installation path for this is: c:\program files\research in motion\blackberry\DesktopMgr.

  • If this is your first time using the Desktop Manager software, you may need to set your serial port first. To check your serial port settings, go to Options and select Serial Settings. You can specify your serial settings using the combo boxes. Your port number and speed must match the settings for the com port that the device is connected to.

  • If you are not sure of your com port settings, you can press the Detect button, and the application will try to match your com port.

Select the Application Loader icon to open the application loader.

A dialog will come up asking you to make sure your data is backed up properly, and that the device is connected to your machine properly.

Note: If your device contains information such as Contacts, Calendar events, Tasks, or messages that you don't want to lose, you will want to Cancel the installation at this point and backup your device. Use the Backup and Resore application in Desktop Manager to perform the backup. This will secure the data that exists on your device. After completing the Backup, return to this installation guide and begin again.

Once you have secured any data and connected your device, select Next.

The next screen will show a list of applications to load to the device. If the RIM Client application is not present in the list you will need to add it using the following steps:

  • Click the Add button which is located near the top of the screen.

  • Navigate to the directory in which you placed the DLL and the ALI files.

  • Select the ALI file and then select Open.

  • You will now return to the previous screen, and the RIM Client application will appear in the list of applications to load - make sure there is a checkmark beside its name.

Once all of the applications that you want to load are in the list and check marked, select Next to continue.

This next screen is not always part of the installation process. It is only shown when the total size of the application(s) you are loading is less than the size of the applications already on the device. It is recommended that you leave the default setting. Select Next to continue.

The next screen will prompt you whether or not you want to delete Application Data (the file system) or Applications. You should not need to delete either of these unless you are trying to recover from device errors cause by an application on the device. If you do select to erase Application Data, you may want to back up the data first before you erase it as it is not recoverable once it is erased. Select Next to continue.

The next screen will show a summary of the applications to be loaded, and a summary of how much space is available on the device, and how much space is needed to load the selected applications. Click Finish to start loading the applications.

Next a dialog will come up showing the progress of loading the applications, after it is finished another dialog will come up informing you that the installation was complete. Your device is now ready to use.

Note: You will not be able to send or receive messages until these steps have been completed and your device has received the account information.

If you give your wireless device to another person to use, the software will have to be re-installed on the device and synchronized before it will work for another user’s settings. This means that your settings will be removed.
